Paul initially started out as a professional footballer spending 5 years as a player at Crewe Alexandra but unfortunately spending large periods out due to various injuries where he spent some time at Lilleshall working through various rehabilitation programmes for his various injuries.
During this time he worked closely with a number of the physiotherapists which is where his interest started in the profession and so when the opportunity to train to become a physiotherapist became available through a scheme set up by the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) at Salford University, he had no hesitation in taking up the opportunity to change his career when his course commenced in 1994. He also played for Morecambe FC during his time at University playing over 250 games for the club in the Unibond Premier and the Vauxhall Conference.
Once qualified he worked in the NHS for about 12 years working his way through the system to eventually become a Clinical Lower Limb Specialist for Wirral PCT, but during the final 3 years of this period was working also at Willaston physiotherapy clinic as a private practitioner.
